Group protests tax privilege to Thai company

ANGELES CITY–A group of concerned Kapampangans has expressed opposition to the granting of tax incentives to a wholly foreign owned company by the Philippine government.
In a statement, Kilusan para sa Pambansang Demokrasya in Central Luzon (KPD-CL) said Charoen Pokphand Foods Philippines Corporation (CPFPC) was granted by the government, through the Board of Investments, with tax and non-tax incentives.
CPFPC, a 100 percent Thai-owned company, engages in feed milling, swine and poultry raising, aquaculture, meat and fish processing and marketing.
“The incentives given by the government to CPFPC further enhance its already huge capitalization and overwhelming competitive capacity thereby threatening great losses and bankruptcy to many Filipino feed millers, hog and poultry raisers,” KPD-CL spokesperson Eugene Orejas said.
Orejas said CPFPC can only provide jobs to 1,500 people but the anticipated and actual losses and bankruptcy of local producers due to unfair competition would translate to massive unemployment in the feed milling, hog and poultry production sectors.
KPD-CL also sees the tax holidays enjoyed by CPFPC and all foreign investors as tantamount to outright surrender of Philippine sovereignty.
During a rally here on Thursday, KPD-CL asked the national government to immediately withdraw the incentives granted to CPFPC; review the foreign company’s permit to operate and suspend and review the tax holidays granted to CPFPC.
Also, KPD-CL wants the government to subsidize local food producers among others.
“This call is important for the defense of local producers and their livelihood,” Orejas said.
