Influential wine awards of Argentina

Date: August 1, 2011

Philippines Wine Shop Clark Wine Center is pleased to share with you articles, news and information about wine, wine events, wine tasting and other topics related to wine and the appreciation of wine.

Wines of Argentina and COVIAR (Argentine Wine Corporation) organized the Argentina Wine Awards 2010 that was held in Mendoza from the 22 to the 25th of February at the Diplomatic Hotel.
In order to reflect the proliferation of Argentina’s wines throughout the world and the growing importance of a range of different markets, the international panel of judges, all of them MASTERS OF WINE, has been selected not only from as wide a range of relevant countries and nationalities as possible but also exclusively from the membership of the Institute of Masters of Wine (www.mastersofwine.org).
The positive publicity that the event generate is very important to the industry but that is not the only benefit. The judges, all highly influential people, gave their knowledge and understanding of Argentina and its wines and the wineries learned what style and quality of wines are best suited to their export markets. All Trophy and Gold Medal winning wines will be used by Wines of Argentina, as in 2009, in its promotional activities abroad demonstrating the high quality of Argentina’s wines.

So why is there an asterisk by the eplmxaes tahm and fahv? I was hoping it was going to take me to some kind of footnote where this idea was fleshed out, but if there is such a footnote, I can’t find it. I wanted to see that footnote because I speak with that same monophthongization and I’m darned tired of seeing that vowel sound spelled out as ah , when it is not an ah . I realize that our set of characters is restricted, but surely it would be better to refer, as is done here, to the monophthongization and put the i in bold type *and stop there*, rather than go on to say that these words are pronounced as tahm and fahv, when they’re generally not not by my family and friends and neighbors, people from New Orleans and throughout Missiissippi and on up as far as Kentucky. The characteristic southern I is *not* an ah .Sigh.
