P212M crops in Central Luzon damaged by floods

SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga — More than P212 million worth of rice, corn and other cops in Central Luzon were damaged by heavy rains and flooding brought about by tropical storm Maring-enhanced southwest monsoon.

The Regional Disaster Risk and Reduction Management Council (RDRRMC) in Central Luzon reported Friday that the partial damaged to agriculture was estimated at P212,094,421.13.

The figures include those from Bataan P72,149,763.75; Bulacan P18,115,359.40; Nueva Ecija 16,306,390.00; Pampanga P59,994,345.00; Tarlac P45,164,111.68, and Zambales P487,451.30.

The number of affected families rose to 339,750 or 1,541,945 persons in 857 villages of the 66 municipalities of the provinces of Bataan, Bulacan, Pampanga, Tarlac, Nueva Ecija and Zambales, the RDRRMC report.

The report also said that there 184 houses in the said five provinces wrecked while 267 others were damaged.

As of Friday, 481 barangays remained under one to five feet deep flood. These were 268 villages in Pampanga, 167 in Bulacan, Tarlac 11, 35 in Bataan and none in Zambales.

The number of casualties due to drowning rose to 11 persons. The latest report were Nazarette Duldulao, 14 and Archie Gamueda, 37, both of Purok 5, Old Cabalan, Olongapo City and Ed Paulo Maco, 12, a first year high school student and resident of Barangay Apalit, Floridablanca, Pampanga.

Gamueda and Duldulao and a certain Patrick Usi, 14, were swimming in a chusher river along Benneth road in Old Cabalan, Olongapo City and attempted to cross the river but they were swept away by strong current.

The report said that Gamueda and Usi were rescued by concerned citizens and taken to James Gordon Memorial Hospital but Gamueda died while undergoing treatment.

The body of Duldulao was found floating at the shoreline of Moon Bay Vista Marina located inside the Subic Bay Metropolitan and Authority (SBMA).

The body of Maco was recovered along Gumain River in Barangay Carmencita, Floridablanca, Pampanga.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Central Luzon Office has provided relief goods to several evacuation centers worth P5,037,985.82.

At least P6,149,400.00 worth of assistance were given to the affected residents by provincial governments of Bataan, Pampanga, Bulacan, Tarlac, and Zambales.

Classes in all levels in Marilao, Baliwag, Calumpit, Hagonoy, Paombong, Obando, San Rafael, and Guiguinto, all in Bulacan, were suspended.

In San Fernando Pampanga, classes from prep-school to high school remains suspended as of Friday.
