‘Chicken feather belen’ bags ‘Belenismo’ award

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO – A belen or nativity scene made up of chicken feathers and mounted by a restaurant in Tarlac City grabbed attention that it was adjudged winner in the monument category of the Belenismo sa Tarlac 2011.
The monument showed life-size figures of Joseph, Mary and the baby child Jesus along with the three wise men and the shepherds depicting almost perfectly the nativity scene.
The main clothing of the characters in the belen was made with colorful chicken feathers for it to appear more appealing to the public, said VES Food House owner Mary Joyce Sibal.
“All materials that were used here are recycled. This is good for the environment because we are contributing to the wellness of the earth. Instead of using brand new materials that will eventually be put to waste, we used and recycled old ones by adding a little aesthetic into it to make it appear as if it is new,” she added.
Sibal noted that “this monument could still be displayed throughout the year so as to feel the Christmas spirit in our restaurant where it has been the main attraction as to date.”
The conceptualization of using chicken feathers came after realizing that instead of just throwing it, why not recycle it for better use and make it more colorful than its usual shade, thinking that in that way, people would stop by and spend time looking at the finished product.
“The span of two months in creating the belen was a great experience especially that it was our first time to join the Belenismo. The spirit of working together (referring to the whole staff of the restaurant) just so proved that each and everyone of us feels that Christmas is a celebration of joy as it is the birth of Jesus Christ,” Sibal said.
VES bested other nine entries in the category and received a trophy and a cash prize of P70,000, handed over personally by President Benigno Aquino III who was guest of honor during the awards nights.
Runners-up were Nay’s House Restaurant in Barangay San Vicente, Tarlac and Jeffrey Valencia Tan House in Poblacion, Pura, which received trophies and cash prizes of P60,000 and P50,000 respectively.
VES is located at Sto. Domingo II, in Capas town and is the talk of the town when it comes to authentic sizzling, exotic Filipino cuisine and elegant yet affordable catering services.
Belenismo is an annual “belen-making” competition in the province of Tarlac divided into six categories namely: diorama high school, diorama personal, church, monumental, grand municipal (local government units) and grand non-municipal (government agencies and business establishments).
It is an annual tradition started in 2007, to promote both the art of Belen-making and the “bayanihan” spirit among the people of Tarlac. It’s a voluntary effort to restore the religious and social significance of the belen as a symbol of Christmas.
It also aims to bring together the people of Tarlac, from different walks of life, and from different parts of the province in one peaceful competition and towards a common goal: to promote Tarlac as one of the country’s top tourist destinations and declare it as the “Belen Capital of the Philippines”.
