‘Tourist police’ group formed

ANGELES CITY — Investors and tourists here need not worry over cheaters, because Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan has posted “tourist policemen” in areas frequented by city visitors.
The 38 volunteering “policemen” or tourist guards (not from the Philippine National Police) were presented to the public on Monday during the flag raising rites here.
“Investors in the city bring a minimum of P5 million worth of investments. However, some people would go to them and cheat them for their own gains. These tourist police will now be the guards of investors and tourists here,” Pamintuan said.
The tourist policemen started posting themselves on perimeter and service roads after the flag raising ceremonies.
Among the places they guarded were the Friendship Highway, Fields Avenue and the Diamond Subdivision in Barangay Balibago.
Aside from guarding investors and tourists’ safety, Pamintuan has also tasked the tourist policemen to arrest employment recruiters who will bring either male or female minors to whatever establishments in the city.
“I asked them to arrest also those who will violate anti-human trafficking laws,” Pamintuan said.
Pamintuan said the arrests of law violators are part of the city’s effort in changing its image as a city with “red light” areas.
“We would like to change the landscape of Angeles City and pattern it after Las Vegas or Reno (in the United States of America),” he said. (Charlene Cayabyab)
