LAST Friday morning, while Jaron and Jaden took turns crying, Jacob displayed a smile.
As if irked by his brothers’ incessant cries, he stuck a finger in Jaden’s mouth.
Amused, Maricel Bate took Jacob’s hand away from Jaden.
“Ka-bugoy nimo Jacob uy (You’re such a bad boy, Jacob),” she said with a smile.
ate, 33, talked animatedly about her triplets, who lay on a tarpaulin-covered bed inside their house in Barangay Paknaan, Mandaue City. Last November, after giving birth to the triplets, she could barely open her mouth to speak.
Eight months after they were born, Jacob has grown bigger than his brothers. While Jaron and Jaden looked alike, the latter was smaller.
“Tulo ka semana pagkahuman nako’g panganak, sige kong kakuyapan (Three weeks after
giving birth, I kept fainting),” Bate recalled.
Multiple births run in her family. An aunt of her delivered triplets before, while her sister had given birth to twins.
After getting pregnant four times in a span of seven years, Bate now has seven children. Three years ago, she gave birth to twins.
A week after they were born, the triplets were baptized with the help of a nun, who also provided a crib for the babies, Bate said.
“Ayaw kalimot pagsampit sa Ginoo (Don’t forget to pray to God),” Bate recalled the nun as saying.
Bate and her husband have kept that in mind. Jaden had been admitted to the hospital three times. Bate said there are times when Jaden has difficulty breathing. A lump has grown on his chest.
Bate said they spent last year’s Christmas at the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC), where Jaden was treated for dehydration and underwent blood transfusion.
“Naay buho-buho iyang kasing-kasing (There were holes in his heart),” Bate said.
Because of pneumonia, Jaden was brought again to the VSMMC last January and to the Cebu Velez General Hospital last month.
Bate said social workers had helped them with the hospital expenses, but they still have debts to pay. She lamented the high cost of oxygen, which Jaden needed every time he was in the hospital.
Bate said the doctor has told them Jaden needs a weekly check-up. “Wala pa siyay giinom karon nga tambal para sa iyang kasing-kasing (He still has no medicines for his heart),” she said. They also have to buy vitamins for Jaden.
Bate said she and her husband requested for financial assistance from the Mandaue City Government last April, and were told the aid will arrive this month.
“Maayo unta makaatubang namo si mayor (I hope we could talk to the mayor),” she said.
Bate was thankful to the City’s social welfare office, which has given them rice, canned goods and milk for the past few months.
Bate said she and her husband are struggling to raise their children, especially the triplets. She said they started feeding their triplets with regular milk four months after they were born, since they could not afford to buy infant milk. She said she could not produce enough breast milk for all three of them.
“Maayo i-syagit og apil sa kalisud (I feel like screaming too),” she said, as she
cradled Jaden, who kept on crying.
Bate said she and her husband worry about the future of their children. Both of them just reached high school. Bate’s husband, William, works at a water-distilling company on an on-call basis. When he has no work, he does a sideline job at a junkshop.
Bate hopes kind people will come to them and help provide for the needs of their triplets, especially Jaden’s medication. When that happens, “mag-sinug gyud ko (I’ll dance the Sinulog),” she said.
