Marcos blames low troop morale on ‘lack of leadership’

SENATOR Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Wednesday blamed President Benigno Aquino III’s “lack of leadership” for the drop in morale within the Armed Forces of the Philippines that has sparked coup rumors.
“Noynoy (Aquino) has only himself to blame for whatever ill feelings these brave soldiers have towards him because they feel that not only is he not supporting and leading them but (he) treats them with disdain and arrogance,” the senator said in a press statement.
The senator made these remarks after the President publicly expressed disappointment at the AFP for losing 19 men in a military operation in Basilan last week.
“They want an assurance that they are placed in the frontline with the full backing and support from their commander. They are brave soldiers willing to defend our sovereignty not with their hands tied but with full support from the top. That is the responsibility of a commander-in-chief to his soldiers that are willing to die defending (the) country,” he said.
Aquino, in a press conference Monday disclosed he has ordered military strikes against “lawless elements” in Zamboanga Sibugay province, that operation is still ongoing as of this post. Aquino has rejected calls for wide scale war against the MILF over the Basilan incident and clashes that followed it, this has earned him criticism especially after rumors circulated of P5 billion that Malacañang supposedly gave the MILF.
Both Malacañang and MILF have denied this, saying the P5 million–not billion–given to MILF chairman Murad Ebrahim was for an institute to train future Bangsamoro leaders.
“Like I said before, the President in Malacañang is no true leader. All this trouble is his own doing,” Marcos said. The two have been at odds since Aquino thumbed down military honors for former President Ferdinand Marcos.
An administration ally, Senator Antonio Trillanes IV gave credence to coup rumors but doubts it will succeed. He has said, however, that the morale of the country’s soldiers has dropped.
Senator Francis Pangilinan, a partymate of the President, also said any destabilization plot is bound to fail.
Senator Aquilino Pimentel III, a member of the Senate majority bloc, meanwhile said “those fueling rumors of a coup against the duly-elected President are doing a great disservice to the country.”
He said plotters of the rumored destabilization plot should run in the 2016 elections “and refrain from dividing the military for their self-serving ends.”
Palace spokesman Edwin Lacierda has said there is no reason to conduct a loyalty check on the AFP since there is no destabilization plot at all. (Jonathan de Santos with Jill Beltran/Sunnex)
