1st int’l English convention attracts foreign linguists

January 04, 2011

CLARK FREEPORT — The first international Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (Tesol) convention recently held in this Freeport has attracted world-leading linguists.

Paul Robertson, director of International Strategies at the Clark Education City (CEC), said the conference drew interest from international linguists like Prof. Rod Ellis from Auckland University, New Zealand, Prof. Z. N. Patil from India, and Dr. Eva Bernat from the University of New South Wales.

“Aside from these international linguists, many other international speakers from Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, Korea, China, the United Kingdom, and Australia flew to Clark and presented topics of Second Language Acquisition,” Robertson said.

Tesol takes into account the various context and purposes for which English is learned and used. A Tesol certification is necessary for teaching English overseas. It is slowly becoming the standard requirement when applying for a teaching position overseas.

The international convention was held at the CEC on November 25 to 27, 2010.

At least 2,000 participants from a wide range of professional groups, educators, professors, teachers of English in private language schools, administrators of university and colleges offering English and education courses, past graduates of education or any course in the arts, tutorial services, researchers, and even call center professionals joined the conference.

Aside from developments on the English language, the conference also showcased Clark and its neighbor areas to the international visitors.
