SM, City Government forge ‘Pyesta’ pact
May 18, 2011
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — SM City Pampanga and the City Government of San Fernando signed Monday a memorandum of agreement for the Henry Sy-owned marathon mall’s sponsorship of the upcoming “Pyestang Fernandino”.
The Pyestang Fernandino will officially reel off on May 16 and will culminate on St. Ferdinand’s feast day on May 30.
The sponsorship agreement was signed by Mayor Oscar Rodriguez, Fiesta executive committee chairman Councilor Alex Patio and SM City Pampanga assistant mall manager Lana Erroba in simple rites at the Congo Grille, where a press conference followed.
After the pact, Erroba handed over to Rodriguez and members of the Fiesta Executive Committee members a check facsimile amounting to P500,000, which will fund in part activities of the 10-day fiesta celebration.
“Our partnership with SM City Pampanga and the rest of the private sector is a strong sign and concrete example of the private-public sector partnership. Ipinapakita nito may tiwala sa bawat isa ang lahat ng sector,” said Rodriguez.
Patio, while thanking SM City Pampanga and the rest of the sponsors of Pyestang Fernandino, also called on everyone to join the celebrations.
“Tayo ay magsama-sama at magkaisa sa pagdiriwang na ito,” he said.
Fiesta ‘firsts’
Among the “firsts” in this year’s Piyestang Fernandino are the Fernandino Airsoft Pyesta Cup and the San Fernando Film Festival featuring Oscar’s Night.
Other activities reinvented include the Cycling Caravan, which will take bikers out of the city to towns like Mexico, Sta. Ana and Guagua to herald Pyestang Fernandino.
Similarly, a province-wide “Pampanga You Can Dance” will be held to give opportunities to other towns to showcase their talents.
“Ito ay para ibalita ang good news of the Pyesta and our call for unity to neighboring towns from ‘Big Brother Oca.’ And it will also be a venue para ipakita rin ang galing nila,” said Senior Tourism Officer Ching Pangilinan.
The City Council has also enacted two resolutions: one inviting businesses in the city to grant substantial discounts on their merchandise during the 10-day celebrations, and another enjoining establishments and institutions to install streamers in front of their buildings in support of Pyestang Fernandino 2010.
Reasons to celebrate
Pangilinan said the city, founded in 1754 or 257 years ago, has many reasons to celebrate its fiesta.
“First, the city’s 35 barangays continue to be venues of good changes, with residents embarking on socio-civic projects and partaking of social services that raise quality of life. Fernandinos participate actively in public governance, doing their bit in helping secure peace and order, greening the environment, and sustaining education and health initiatives among the poorest of the poor,” he said.
He also cited the improvement of the city’s economy, as seen in the influx of private investments (7,486 registered businesses), creation of jobs and growth of the middle class in the city to 38 percent in 2010.
Pangilinan said the unity of elected leaders and civil servants, which helped transform the City Government into a genuine enabler of progress and quality life, is also a reason to celebrate.
“This year’s fiesta celebrates the unity of our people and leaders, and the greater prospects for good changes in the City of San Fernando as a result of that unity,” Patio said.
Rodriguez agreed with Patio and said an “awakened citizenry is surely a crucial pillar in bringing about development.”
“Without the people’s participation in governance, political leadership will be lacking. But to make people take part, we leaders should demonstrate we are worthy of their trust. We should also bring the services down to the grassroots so that the opportunities for raising the quality of life like education, health and jobs are within the reach of the poor,” said Rodriguez.
He added that a city filled with unity “deserves a happy feast and thanksgiving to God.”
