National government to shoulder infra projects costs

November 29, 2010

ANGELES CITY — The National Government is expected to shoulder the costs of improving road networks in this city, Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan said.

In a recent interview, Pamintuan revealed that Public Works Secretary Rogelio Singson and Budget Secretary Butch Abad had instructed their local counterparts to check on major roads that can be developed.

“The secretaries sent regional directors, structural designers, undersecretaries, even people responsible from the previous administration and told me that major road improvements here like the [road] widening will be funded by the National Government,” Pamintuan said.

In a three-hour meeting with the officials, Pamintuan said among the infrastructures that will be developed are the Angeles-Magalang-Pandan road, the Fil-Am Friendship Road and the construction of another road in Barangay Pulung Maragul.

“Masyadong masikip ang daan sa Angeles dahil ginawa ‘yan noong panahon na ito ay ordinary town lang. Pati mga drainage natin pang-munisipyo lang kaya ngayong developed na ang city, nangangailangan na tayo ng four lanes,” Pamintuan said. (Our roads are too narrow because they were constructed when Angeles was still just an ordinary town. Even the drainage system is good only for a municipality. But now that the city is seeing progress, we need four lanes for our roads.)

Aside from the national government, the mayor added that the Metro Angeles Chamber of Commerce, Inc. will also take part in the road improvements.

However, the upcoming road-widening projects will require the cutting of some trees along the highway.

In neighboring City of San Fernando, a P440-million road-widening project was stopped due to the opposition of the environmentalist group Save the Trees Coalition (STC).

Pamintuan said he has talked with representatives of the STC regarding the removal of some trees to give way to the project.

“Pumayag naman sila (STC), basta i-ball out mo ‘yong trees at ‘wag i-cut at i-transfer sa ibang lugar,” he said. (They agreed to the tree cutting on the condition that the trees will be balled out and transferred to another place)

Pamintuan said he will again consult the STC and other environmentalist groups before the road-widening projects start.

“We will, anyway, plant 700 trees for every tree that was balled out.
I think that’s enough already,” Pamintuan said. (Charlene Cayabyab)
