New ad campaign looks to draw wine lovers to Lodi

Lodi vintners are ready to show their customers just how crazy they are about producing wine.
A new advertising campaign that launched Wednesday, called “LoCA,” is meant to directly target consumers and encourage them to purchase Lodi wine. The campaign, organizers hope, will not only increase people’s tendency to purchase Lodi wine, but will also encourage people to visit Lodi more often, thus boosting local business and revenue.
LoCA — short for “Lodi, CA” — is also Spanish for “crazy,” something the marketing committee on the Lodi Winegrape Commission found to be a very clever and very apt acronym for their campaign.
“The Winegrape Commission had been focused more on the industry side of advertising, and we have done a good job there,” said Richard Lauchland, chair of the commission’s marketing committee. “All the trade people know exactly what we have going on here. But one element we had not spent time and effort on was reaching out to the consumer.”
The campaign, which will be heavily online, will use social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter to draw consumers in to learn about how many wine varieties are produced in the region and the location of the area’s wineries.
A new website and smartphone application have also been developed to make the advertising campaign more accessible to consumers.
“People have been ingrained to go a certain direction with advertising,” local wine grower and marketing committee member Kyle Lerner said. “What is so exciting for us about this campaign is that we have been taken in a totally new direction. This is the first time where the consumer is in the forefront of our minds when we created our advertisements.”
Lerner added that the campaign will hopefully draw in more people to visit the Lodi area, which he said was still a somewhat untouched oasis for wine connoisseurs.
Should the campaign be successful, Lerner said more people will want to visit Lodi, which would in turn help boost the local economy.
Currently, the campaign has only kicked off to target Lodi wine growers’ most immediate audience — Northern California.
But the commission plans to extend their advertising to southern California and parts of the East Coast soon, including Florida and New York, where Lodi wines are also sold.
And while it is not an immediate goal of the campaign, the commission’s executive director Mark Chandler said more jobs could also be created in the future if the campaign brings more people to Lodi looking for service in the wine industry.
“We are always creating jobs and winetasting rooms seem to be popping up by the day,” he said. “But this campaign is off to an amazing start, and if it continues to radiate as well as it already has, there will definitely be more employment opportunities in the future.”
