Palace: Arroyo’s allies not competent to discuss her medical condition

THE legal counsel and spokesperson of former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo are “not competent” to discuss her medical condition, Presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said.
“The medical spokesperson of congresswoman GMA (Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo) is not doing the explaining,” Lacierda said over state-run dzRB radio.
“Only her lawyer and spokesperson (are talking about it). As far as I’m concerned, they’re not fully competent to discuss (Arroyo’s condition).”
Lacierda was referring to Arroyo’s lawyer Raul Lambino and spokesperson Elena Bautista-Horn who, early this week, said they may contest an order at the Supreme Court that required the ex-President to seek permission before traveling abroad.
No decision has yet been made about Arroyo’s request for an allow departure order (ADO) after Justice Secretary Leila de Lima deferred the matter next week once she returns from an international conference in Cambodia next week.
Arroyo needs to secure approval for leaving the country after being placed on the immigration watchlist owing to her involvement in the electoral sabotage charges filed against her, former First Gentleman Jose Miguel “Mike” Arroyo, and 41 others.
“Let’s wait for the decision of Secretary Leila de Lima and all these things may be addressed,” Lacierda said.
Based on the recommendations of Health Secretary Enrique Ona, De Lima said Arroyo appears to be recovering well and might not need to travel abroad to seek medical treatment.
For his part, in a text message to Sun.Star, Lambino said “Lacierda, as usual, misses his target.”
The “real issue at hand…is the brazen disregard by Aquino and DOJ Secretary De Lima of our constitutional right to travel,” Lambino added.
“The purpose of PGMA’s going abroad for medical treatment is not the issue at all. Our liberty is now put in jeopardy by this vindictive Aquino government whose priority is to persecute and humiliate the Arroyos for survey ratings purposes,” he further said.
The Arroyo camp has also challenged Secretary Ona to find a specialist in the country which could do a metabolic bone biopsy, a medical procedure the former President needs, according to her doctors at the St. Luke’s Medical Center in Taguig City.
Bautista-Horn, for her part, said that she does not need to be a doctor to speak about the former President’s condition considering her several meetings with Arroyo’s doctors and discussions with the patient herself.
“Ako po ay marunong umintindi. Pag meron po akong hindi maintindihan, nagbabasa ako at nagtatanong…Araw-araw din po ako sa hospital noon. Hindi nga po ako doktor pero hindi naman po ako ‘mangmang’. Sana si Secretary Lacierda matuto ring magbasa at magtanong bago magsalita,” she said in a text message. (Sunnex)
