Palace: Arroyo’s mug shots fake
MANILA (Updated) — Malacanang backed Tuesday Local Government Secretary Jesse Robredo’s statement that the mug shots of former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo published in a national broadsheet and circulated online are fake.
Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said Robredo verified with the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG), which has the custody of the former President’s mug shots.
She clarified that the Southern Police District (SPD) members were the only personnel present when the shots were taken at the hospital even though the photos are being kept by the CIDG.
On Tuesday morning, Robredo and SPD officer-in-charge James Bucayu gave conflicting statements regarding the supposed mug shots of Arroyo that were released to the public.
The local government chief denied the photos’ authenticity, while Bucayu confirmed that the photos were real.
In a separate report, Philippine National Police chief Director General Nicanor Bartolome said that Bucayu was misquoted by the media.
“He clarified everything in our meeting,” said Bartolome, adding he already authorized Senior Superintendent Joel Coronel as official police spokesman on case confronting Arroyo.
Coronel is the chief of the CIDG-National Capital Region.
Bartolome also maintained the published pictures are not the authentic mug shot photos of Arroyo, noting some discrepancies in the published photos with that of the authentic ones.
“Therefore, I categorically say that these published pictures are not the authentic mug shot photos as what was reported to me by the CIDG,” Bartolome said at the Philippine National Police (PNP) headquarters in Camp Crame in Quezon City.
He also said he has given instructions to subordinate officers that the photos should be given only to court officials.
“Before these mug shot photos appeared in the national papers, I have instructed our arresting officers and police custodian to ensure that the booking sheets, fingerprint cards, and mug shot photos shall only be submitted to the RTC (regional trial court) judge or designated representatives,” he said.
Police last Saturday took Arroyo’s mug shots and fingerprints at St. Luke’s Medical Center in Taguig City, where the former President has been confined since November 15.
Robredo said Coronel was tasked to administer the booking after Pasay City Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 112 Judge Jesus Mupas issued an arrest warrant against Arroyo for alleged electoral sabotage raps in connection with 2007 elections.
Arroyo’s lawyers appealed to the court to withhold the former President’s mug shots to avoid further embarrassment.
The court said anyone caught publishing the Pampanga lawmaker’s mug shots will face charges.
Ferdinand Topacio, counsel for Arroyo’s husband Jose Miguel, expressed displeasure over the leakage, stressing that Arroyo does not deserve humiliation since she has yet been convicted.
For his part, Arroyo’s legal spokesperson said the former President was already informed of this development.
“I believe the former President was already informed of these pictures. Yesterday (Monday), we got information that the Inquirer will publish the mug shots and she was informed of the possibility that these will circulate,” Lambino said.
Valte, meanwhile, declined to comment whether the photos were edited, noting that she has not seen the original copies. (Jill Beltran/Virgil Lopez/VR/Sunnex)
