Groups invent cultural material

CULTURAL groups united to put into video and written form the endangered cultural heritage of the Cordillera Administrative Region.
The different cultural dance troupes of the tertiary schools of Cordillera came together during the Cordillera Dance PowWOW last Thursday and Friday held at Benguet State University (BSU).
Apayao State College, Abra State Institute of Science and Technology, BSU, Ifugao State University, Kalinga-Apayao State College and the Mountain State Polytechnic College (MPSPC) represented by BSU participated in the event.
The different groups performed their respective dances. They also taught their dances to the various groups that gathered.
However, a former professor and former president of the MPSPC Dr. Caridad Fiar-od corrected the “modernized” cultural dances.

“We want to sustain the ethnicity and originality of the different dances of the region. Originally, the dances were usually performed passionately,” said Fiar-od.
She added choreography is now taking place in the society but they will not allow it to maneuver the regional cultural dances.
“We are not against choreography; we only hope to impart the importance of our dances not just for entertainments.”
She also said they wanted to emphasize the cultural protocols specifically the hierarchy on who would come first on the dance and so on.
The output of the activity will be an instructional video material the teachers of the region could use in their classroom instruction. The documentation will also help promote and preserve the Cordilleran culture.
“I thought of making an instrument for the Physical Education teachers to use because many teachers cannot teach our cultural dances because of lack of instructional materials. Most of the teachers don’t know also these dances we have,” explained BSU Center for Culture and the Arts Director and the overall head of the event Maria Luz Fang-asan.
Prior to the activity, she submitted a proposal on the provision of such instructional material to the Cordillera Knowledge Network. She also presented the proposal to the State Colleges and Universities (SUCs) of the region. Members of the SUCs approved the proposal and agreed to send their cultural dance troop for the cause.
“This is the first in our region. It is likened to a trial event. We hope to do more documentation not only for the dances but including the native chants of Cordillera,” said Fang-asan.
She said dances are just the beginnings of the effort. They will expand to chants and native songs. “We started with the dances because it is the most practiced in the region.”
The end product is expected to be finished by January of 2012 but will be launched on July during the celebration of the 25th founding anniversary of the Cordillera.
Meanwhile, a written form of the cultures of the region was launched during the activity. The BSU Mountain Collegian’s Cultural Magazine contains the stories of the old and the prevailing cultures of the region. Copies were distributed to the Provincial Library, BSU Library, Department of Education and the participants.
The cultural groups from SUCs are thankful for the support of Governor Nestor Fongwan, Bibak Chicago and Julius Inque.
