‘Sendong’ death toll rises to 14
MANILA (2nd Update, 11:35 a.m.) – The death toll from Tropical Storm Sendong (international name: Washi) has risen to 14 as it continues to batter northern Mindanao Saturday, a disaster official said.
Executive Director Benito Ramos of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) in a radio interview said of the 14 fatalities, nine were from Iligan City due to flashfloods, two from Cagayan de Oro, and three from Polanco, in Zamboanga del Norte.
Ramos said the nine victims recovered from a flash flood in Iligan City are yet to be identified.
In the 4:30 a.m. update of NDRRMC, three fatalities in Zamboanga del Norte were identified as Mrs. Damuag, 60, Rodrigo Siangco, 30, and Rogelio Ramirez Jr., 8, who all died for drowning.
One also is reported missing.
Sendong made landfall in Baganga town, Davao Oriental, Friday afternoon.
In its 10 a.m. weather bulletin, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said Sendong was spotted 180 kilometer west of Dumaguete City, packing winds of 75 kilometer per hour (kph) and gustiness up to 90 kph.
Signal number 2 is hoisted in Palawan, Southern Negros and Zamboanga del Norte, while signal number 1 remains hoisted in Southern Cebu, Siquijor and Northern Negros, Zamboanga del Sur and Misamis Occidental as well as Cuyo island.
In Cebu City, almost 2,900 seafaring passengers were stranded on Friday, after Coast Guard authorities stopped 21 vessels from sailing, for their own safety.
A heavy rain and gusts hit Metro Cebu late Friday afternoon, which flooded some streets and delayed office workers’ and Christmas shoppers’ trips home.
Boy Artiaga, weather observer at Pagasa’s Mactan, Cebu station, said residents in Cebu can expect rains while Sendong is in the Philippine area of responsibility, but the tropical storm is expected to exit the country by Monday.
“Basically, all routes to and from Cebu were suspended due to the typhoon,” Cebu Coast Guard (CG) Commander Rolando Punzalan said Friday.
Punzalan assured the CG will check weather updates from time to time and will clear vessels to leave once the weather improves.
“We hope the passengers will understand, as we are only implementing this for their safety,” said Punzalan.
Cebu City’s Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (LDRRMC) missed City Hall’s Christmas party on Friday when the tropical storm dumped heavy rains on the city.
LDRRMC executive director Alvin Santillana said their personnel were told to stand by so they can immediately respond to emergencies.
True enough, Santillana said Friday’s heavy rain and strong wind brought about by Sendong uprooted and blew down trees.
On Kamagong St. in Barangay Kamputhaw, a tree tumbled on the street, blocking then the way, but it was immediately removed by the personnel from LDRRMC, Bureau of Fire Protection and the Emergency Rescue Unit Foundation.
Another tree fell on a house in Barangay Sambag II as well as in Barangay Buhisan, but Santillana said no one was hurt.
“Only minor damage (was caused),” he added.
Asked if there have been landslides, Santillana said they have not received any report.
The LDRRMC, he assured, will remain on full alert until Sendong leaves the country.
No disasters were reported despite Friday’s torrential rain, but the council was ready to field search and rescue teams to vulnerable areas.
Joy Hernandez, deputy for operations of the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (RDRRMC) in Central Visayas, urged the public to take preemptive measures, like evacuating from coastal or low-lying areas.
“We are always aiming for zero casualties,” she said.
There are five areas in Cebu Province that are almost always affected by storms.
They were identified as Mananga River in Talisay City; Cotcot River in Compostela; Guindarohan River in Minglanilla; Valladolid and Luwan-Luwan Rivers in Carcar City; and Butuanon River in Mandaue City.
In Cebu City, the Lahug River, Guadalupe River, Mahiga Creek, and Cansaga River are also being monitored.
“We should not wait anymore for the government to evacuate us,” Hernandez added.
She said RDRRMC will coordinate with local officials to identify evacuation centers that will be used by affected families.
Interviewed Friday, Poro Mayor Luciano Rama Jr. said they were preparing for the storm but that he was optimistic their disaster preparedness program and drills would help them.
San Francisco Mayor Aly Arquillano said they were hoping the storm would change course.
Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia, in a separate interview, said as far back as two or three days ago, Capitol already received advice from Pagasa about a possible weather disturbance.
Notices were sent to town and component city mayors in order for them to prepare.
As of Friday afternoon, no towns asked for assistance yet. (RSB/JBT/PDF/DSM/RSA/Sun.Star Cebu/Sunnex)
