Pangasinan celebrates anniversary of Lingayen Gulf Landings

LINGAYEN – The Provincial Government of Pangasinan will once again immortalize and refresh today, Monday, the valor and heroism of the Pangasinan World War II veterans and defenders of Philippine Independence.
Governor Amado Espino Jr. will lead the celebration of the 67th Lingayen Gulf Landings Anniversary, back-to-back with the Pangasinan Veteran’s Day. The program will be held at the Veterans Memorial Park at the Capitol Compound.
The Provincial Government, however, did not request from Malacañang to declare Monday as special non-working holiday.
Espino will lead the activities today, which will start with a thanksgiving mass at 7 a.m. to be officiated by Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas.
Espino, Villegas, guest of honor former president Fidel V. Ramos and some members of foreign diplomatic corps will lead other guests and the war veterans in a solemn rite that will highlight the bravery of our unsung heroes who fought valiantly to obtain the freedom that we enjoy today.
Special guests are Major General Jose Mabanta Jr., commander of the 7th ID of the Philippine Army; Undersecretary Ernesto Carolino, Philippine Veterans Affairs Office administrator; Group Captain Craig White, Australian Embassy Defense Attache; Lieutenant Colonel Michael Ercolano III, US Embassy Marine Attache; and Philippine Veterans Bank Chairman Emmanuel de Ocampo.
One of the highlights is the launching of a book entitled “Biographical Sketches of Pangasinan Heroes of World War II” written by Deborah Beltran-Castillo and Dr. Cecilian Beltran-Daranciang.
Event Chairperson Marilou Utanes, provincial treasurer, said the book features 32 (including De Ocampo) World War II veterans who risked their lives together with the other veterans in pursuit of independence.
Provincial Administrator Rafael Baraaan said they survived the war to tell their stories and become inspirations to the youths. Ramos will lead the unveiling of the book.
At lunch time, there will be a cultural show by the Dangoan Pangasinan composed of provincial employees and department heads. Just like in the past years, the Provincial Health Office will host a medical mission in front of the Sison Auditorium for the veterans who will be present. (Liway C. Manantan-Yparraguirre)
