Public works agency sets deadline for cut-off channel

Monday, December 6, 2010

ARAYAT – The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has set a 55-day period for the construction of the cut-off channel along the portion of the Pampanga River in Barangay Guemasan this town.

Engr. William Bustos, Assistant Chief of the DPWH Construction Division, who works at the same time as cut-off channel project engineer, said the dredging activity in the area started Wednesday last week upon the instruction of DPWH Regional Director Alfredo Tolentino and the Provincial Government.

“Target nating tapusin ang paghuhukay sa cut-off channel sa loob ng 50 na araw o mas maaga pa,” Bustos said.

The cut-off project has a total budget of P25 million allocated by the National Government through a request from Governor Lilia Pineda and Pampanga Representative Gloria Macapagal Arroyo in one of the meetings with Public Works Secretary Rogelio Singson.

Bustos added that they have been working in two shifts. They even asked workers to work overtime to finish the project as scheduled, taking into consideration the number of residents to be affected and the extent of damages that may be incurred.

The cut-off channel is expected to weaken the current of water bombarding Guemasan Dike particularly during the rainy season.

“Mahahati kasi sa dalawa yung agos ng tubig sa Pampanga River. Inaasahan natin na 50 percent na lamang ang daloy sa dati at yung another 50 percent ng tubig sa dadaloy na sa cut off channel,” Bustos pointed out. (Pampanga River’s water flow will be halved. We’re hoping that only 50 percent will flow in the old path and the other 50 percent will flow through the cut-off channel.) (Herbert P. Mapiles)
