Lawmaker distributes P2.6M worth of scholarships

Wednesday, December 8, 2010

MEXICO — Third district Rep. Aurelio Gonzales Jr. distributed on Tuesday P2.6 million worth of scholarship grants to 706 students of the Don Honorio Ventura Technological State University (DHVTSU)-Mexico Campus in a bid to bring more indigent youth to school.

Gonzales said that the move will finance the last and current semester enrolment of the said students who are enrolled in the different Bachelor of Science courses here. He said that the funding allocation would form part of his ongoing “Iskolar ng Dong” program, which aims to provide educational assistance to poor but deserving students.

“We have been continuously coordinating with DHVTSU president Enrique Baking and one of the primary agreements we have finalized is the continuation of the scholarship grants to students here,” Gonzales said, adding that he is currently maintaining some 3,000 students enrolled at DHVTSU-Mexico Campus and the main campus in Bacolor town.

DHVTSU president Enrique Baking told Sun.Star Pampanga that Gonzales’s move would ensure the enrollment of the said students. He said that scholarship grants coursed through the school improves DHVTSU’s current enrollment statistics.

“We are urging other leaders and civic groups to come up with their own scholarship program in partnership with DHVTSU. Sending indigents to school would improve not just the lives of these students but also the lives of their respective families,” Baking said.

The DHVTSU-Mexico Campus caters to students coming from the villages of Mexico, San Luis, Arayat and Sta. Ana. The campus started operating through the efforts of Gonzales after a few years of being closed down due to low enrollment almost three years ago.

Gonzales added that he will increase the number of scholars here to 1,000 students more each year to give other indigents a chance to attend college. He said that the move will further improve the number of enrollees here in the coming years. (Ian Ocampo Flora)
