Corona: No regrets

MANILA — Former Chief Justice Renato Corona said Sunday he has no regrets making a stand for the cause of judicial independence and called for wider transparency in government service.
Corona, who was removed from his post Tuesday last week after the Senate impeachment court found him guilty of betraying the public trust and committing culpable violation for failing to truthfully declare his assets and net worth, said the quest for transparency does not end with his ouster.
“It is only beginning,” he stressed.
“A growing number of dedicated Filipinos have now taken the clarion call and, with the help of our friends in the media, many have taken up the cudgels of demanding higher levels of transparency through the outright waiver of confidentiality,” he added in a statement emailed to reporters Sunday.
The statement was apparently written Saturday, shortly before Corona left The Medical City hospital, where he got confined after having difficulty in breathing and dizziness due to hypoglycemia or low blood sugar. He was rushed to the hospital after he testified before the impeachment court last May 22.
The statement released Sunday was his first public statement following his ouster last week.
The impeachment court convicted Corona even after he was forced to sign a waiver of confidentiality on his foreign and local bank accounts in a last-ditch effort to convince senator-judges of his innocence of the charges against him.
Corona, in defending his failure to disclose his bank accounts, claimed he is protected by the absolute confidentiality provided under the Foreign Currency Deposit Act, while his peso accounts are actually commingled funds of his family and his wife’s family corporation fund.
Before the end of his testimony at the Senate, however, Corona lifted the conditions in signing his waiver and called for the 188 House prosecutors and administration-allied Senator Franklin Drilon to do the same.
Reiterating his call, Corona said Sunday signing the waiver for the other officials’ bank accounts is “the new standard for public trust in government service.”
“We assure our people that this new thrust will bring better governance and a new culture for public service. The Filipino people deserve nothing less,” he said.
Corona likewise said the past six months leading to his impeachment have taught his family to trust in God.
“He has been the healing touch, the calming presence and assuring protection in our most difficult moments; and by His Amazing Grace, we remain standing like trees firmly planted in the ground,” the country’s former top justice said.
For his defense lawyers, Corona said while they did their best to defend him, “reality has a way of getting in the way of idealism.”
With Corona’s ouster from the Supreme Court, Associate Justice Antonio Carpio took over as acting Chief Justice being the next most senior magistrate in terms of appointment to the High Court.
Today, Monday, Carpio is scheduled to convene the Judicial and Bar Council, the constitutional body tasked to screen and submit names of nominees to the President to vacant judicial posts, so that it could set in motion the nomination process for the next Chief Justice.
