Village chief hit for quarrying

CANDABA — Residents of Pansinao village here complained on Tuesday about village chief Alejandro Yumul’s alleged quarrying.
According to Mang Nando (not his true name), a resident complainant, the continuing quarrying in their place has endangered the lives of hundreds of residents, including children who have been exposed to “white smog” (sand and dust) during hauling hours from morning to evening.
“Wala silang paki-alam sa mga tao sa barangay. Basta hakot lang sila ng hakot kahit magliparan ang alikabok sa kalsada na nakakasama sa kalusugan lalo na ng mga bata. Sana man lang mayroon silang truck ng tubig na nagdidilig para mabawasan ang alikabok. Pero basta kumita lang sila, ikokompromiso pa nila ang kaligtasan namin,” he said.
Mang Nando stressed that the quarry site is just beside the Pampanga River along the portion of their village.
He said the structure of the waterways of the said river would be changed if the volume of water coming from upper Pampanga will hit their place.
“Malalim na ang kanilang nahuhukay. Ang problema nga lang kadikit lang nito ng ilog na malaki. Sakaling dumating ang malakas na agos ng tubig mula Nueva Ecija delikado para sa mga residente dahil magbabago ang takbo nito, bukod pa sa posibling pagkasira ng Pampanga River” he added.
It was learned by Sun.Star Pampanga that Yumul is extracting quarry materials from his own land. However, according to some residents, this does not give him the right to sacrifice the health of his constituents.
“Ang problema pati ang daan namin dito apektado. Nasisira dahil sa maghapong pagdaan ng malalaking trucks na kargado,” Mang Nando lamented.
Sun.Star Pampanga tried to reach Yumul for comments but to no avail as of this posting.
