Arroyos file bill on food labels
December 28, 2010
MANILA, Philippines—Sure there are food items that carry information on nutrients. But why not make it standard?
Two lawmakers are seeking the approval of legislation requiring manufacturers, packagers and distributors to indicate the nutritional value of products on their labels.
Camarines Sur Rep. Diosdado Arroyo and his mother Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo said proper labeling of nutrients in products would promote health consciousness among consumers.
In filing House Bill 1469, or the proposed Nutrition Labeling Act of 2010, the Arroyos noted the absence of such a law.
The bill mandates that a commodity bear a label specifying the identity of the commodity, as well as the name and place of business of the manufacturer, packer or distributor.
More importantly, it requires a separate label that contains information on the number of servings or other units, total number of calories, and any vitamin, mineral or other nutrient to assist consumers in “maintaining healthy dietary practices.”
