Court junks electoral protest vs Arayat mayor

February 7, 2011

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — A local court here dismissed last week the electoral protest filed against Arayat Mayor Chito Espino during the May 2010 elections.
“The people of Arayat have spoken and the decision of the honorable court must be respected,” said Espino following the dismissal of the protest filed by his opponent Bonifacio Emmanuel Alejandrino.
Espino, a three-term mayor, said the decision of Judge Edgar Chua of the Regional Trial Court had “put the final nail in the coffin and put to rest the case for the benefit of the people.”

“The decision of the court is a manifestation that last year’s local election in our beloved town was clean and credible,” he added.
Espino won with 20,924 votes against Alejandrino’s 16,636 cast in the 30 barangays of this first-class municipality.
The ballot boxes, subject of the instant election protest, were opened on September 15, 2010, for the purpose of determining whether or not any objection or protests were registered by watchers of protestant Alejandrino.
“It is worthy to note that after an examination by the court, in the presence of counsels from both parties and the election officer of the Minutes of Testing and sealing of Voting and Counting from the contested clustered precincts, it was discovered therein that no objection or protest whatsoever was ever registered by the watchers of protestant Bonifacio Emmanuel E. Alejandrino,” the decision read. (Chris Navarro)
