Truckers urged to follow law-mandated weight

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — The Public Works department urged the truckers to adhere to law-mandated weight despite Capitol’s planned purchase of portable weighing scales to be set up in strategic areas in Pampanga.
“We must continuously appeal to truckers to adhere to the law-mandated weight which is 13.5 tons per axle, as well as what is specified in their registration certificates on maximum gross weight which is what they should really follow,” said Public Works regional director Alfredo Tolentino.
He said that while Capitol’s weighing scales would curb overloading, the reduction of damages inflicted by overloaded trucks on all roads must be sustained with ample “police powers” and monitoring 24/7.
“DPWH (Department of Public Works and Highways) has no police powers. On our part, we appreciate the effort of the Provincial Government to once and for all stop overloading which practically destroys all our roads. Since they could pass through NLEx [North Luzon Expressway] and SCTEx [Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway], they normally use MacArthur Highway where we have invested so much pero nasisira rin in the end,” said Tolentino.
On the possibility of using just the printout from the portable weighing scale as a “single pass” for all roads, Tolentino said it may have to be viewed on a case-to-case basis.
“They [NLEx and SCTEx] have their respective weighbridges. We cannot force them to accept that ticket from portable weighing scales,” Tolentino said.
He said the DPWH has constructed three weighbridges in the region to protect national roads.
“We have constructed one in Guiguinto, Bulacan and Tarlac but we are still waiting for the equipment to be installed. Currently, we have one that is already operational in Cabanatuan City,” said Tolentino.
