City to do more tests for E. coli on rivers

THE recent spate of rainy days has brought E. coli to the rivers of Talomo and Matina Aplaya, according to initial findings of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR).
According to Wikipedia, Escherichia coli or E. coli is a bacterium commonly found in the lower intestine of warm-blooded organisms. Most E. coli strains are harmless, but some can cause serious food poisoning in humans.
E. coli are not always confined to the intestine, and their ability to survive for brief periods outside the body makes them an ideal indicator organism to test environmental samples for fecal contamination.
Davao City Agriculture Office Leo Avila III said they will be doing five sampling tests on Talomo and Matina rivers together with the City Planning Office.
He added that E. coli content have reached unsafe levels but it is not alarming. It also still needs more sampling to check the potential sources of the bacterium, he said.
“Kinahanglan pa na ug thorough tests or sampling kay motaas man jud ang e-coli content pag magsige ug ulan and mobaba pud ug di na pud mag-ulan (It is important that we do thorough testing or sampling because the E. coli content usually goes up when it rains and then decreases when there’s no rain),” Avila said.
Avila said E. coli needs to be addressed because the government along with BFAR is planning to develop a mariculture in Talomo. (Carmelle Marie Harrow)
