Mayor: Cutting of trees ‘not City Government’s decision’

March 17, 2011
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Mayor Oscar Rodriguez clarified Monday that it is not the City Government that gives the final decision on the cutting of trees along the MacArthur Highway.
He said, however, that he will favor a decision regarding the cutting of trees that promises benefits to the majority of people.
“Whatever it is that could benefit the interest of the many, we will give our support to it,” Rodriguez said.
Earlier, Public Works Regional Director Alfredo Tolentino said he will seek Rodriguez’s help in convincing the Save Trees Coalition (STC) to give its nod to the cutting of about 30 trees along the highway.
Rodriguez said he has long been convincing the STC to reconsider their stand to give way to road expansions.
STC spokespersons Cecile Yumul and Eugune Orejas wanted government agencies to look for a win-win solution to the issue, like the creation of a bicycle lane and the strict implementation of traffic rules.
About 30 trees from Pilar Village in Barangay San Isidro up to St. Scholastica Academy in Barangay San Agustin should be cut down before the Public Works department can pursue its road widening projects.
The road widening activities are part of the P440-million Manila North Road expansion of the Public Works office in Central Luzon.
When the STC rallied against the cutting of trees, the expansion project was stopped.
However, Tolentino said he is hopeful that the STC will change its position so that the remaining portions of the MacArthur Highway can be converted into a six-lane road.
Portions of the highway from Barangay Sindalan up to Barangay San Isidro have already been expanded.
The road expansion is seen as a preparation for the influx of business investments and tourists that will come to the region.
