Inclusion of earthquake, bridge engineering in curriculum urged
March 24, 2011
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Pampanga Representative Aurelio Gonzales Jr. has called on the Commission on Higher Education (Ched) to include earthquake and bridge engineering in the curriculum of engineering students.
Gonzales said the inclusion of the two subject areas would greatly improve the knowledge of future engineers in creating building designs that are resistant to earthquakes.
The lawmaker earlier called on concerned government agencies to conduct structural audit of public buildings in the province to find out which buildings are at risk of being severely damaged once a strong earthquake hits the country.
The move came after earthquakes hit New Zealand and Japan recently.
Gonzales said there is also a need to start talks with engineering groups and the education sector on possible amendments on the country’s building code and the creation of academic interventions to make future engineers more responsive to the threats of earthquakes.
Gonzales said the country lies within the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, where earthquakes often occur.
A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck the northern province of Ilocos Norte Sunday afternoon but no damages were reported.
The epicenter of the tectonic quake was located 122 kilometers northeast of Laoag City with a depth of 39 kilometers. It occurred at 4:26 p.m., said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
Also, a moderate earthquake jolted Metro Manila on Monday while Congress was in session. The magnitude 5.7 tremor occurred 12 kilometers northeast of Lubang Island, around 150 kilometers southwest of Manila at 6:37 p.m., according to Phivolcs.
“We must not wait before another string quake rocks Luzon. There is a need now to revisit preparedness plans and create long term interventions,” Gonzales said.
