Historic railway station to get P5-M facelift
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO – The restoration of the historic Philippine National Railways station in Barangay Sto. Nino pegged at P5 million has earned the nod of authorities.
Mayor Oscar Rodriguez led the groundbreaking and time capsule laying for the restoration of the station during the commemoration of the 69th Araw ng Kagitingan.
Rodriguez said authorities from North Rail have approved the planned restoration. “They will incorporate it in the modernization plan of the station.”
The station will be restored and converted into a museum for veterans and housing war artifacts.
The railway station, where the Death Kilometer 102 marker stands, has played a vital role during the infamous death march, where thousands of Filipino and American soldiers fell during World War II under the hands of the Japanese army.
City Tourism Officer Ching Pangilinan said the restoration will be in collaboration with the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority and the San Fernando Heritage Foundation.
