Foreigners discouraged to join crucifixion rites
April 15, 2011
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — An official from this city has discouraged foreign nationals from joining the crucifixion rites at Barangay San Pedro Cutud on Good Friday.
Councilor Jimmy Lazatin, chairperson of the Maleldo Committee 2011, said crucifixion rites will be limited to Kapampangan natives who have life-long religious vows.
“This way, we can keep the solemnity of the observation of the Holy Week,” Lazatin said.
Foreigners, however, are welcome to watch the crucifixion rites at the Barangay San Pedro Cutud and in neighboring villages of Sta. Lucia and San Juan.
In the previous years, some foreigners insisted on joining the crucifixion rites and even adjoin penitents who bled themselves as part of their religious vows.
However, these foreigners did not take the religious rites seriously so it somehow lost its solemnity.
“If ever a foreigner is really persistent to join the crucifixion rites, if they’re serious enough and really sincere in joining, we might allow them to participate,” Lazatin said.
More guests
Ching Pangilinan, senior city tourism officer, said around 30,000 visitors are expected to witness the “Via Crusis” (Way of the Cross) which will culminate at the man-made hill in Barangay San Pedro Cutud.
“We have worked on highlighting the re-enactment of the Kapampangan version of the passion of the Christ,” Pangilinan said.
The “Via Crusis” is the only Kapampangan piece on the passion of the Christ written by amateur Ricardo Navarro in 1955.
It was first performed during the Holy Week some 57 years ago by amateur volunteer artists of Barangay San Pedro Cutud who had time on their hands because work or exertion on those holy days was taboo.
Around 10 people are expected to be crucified at the village’s hill including Ruben Enaje, 50, who will play the role of Jesus Christ. Enaje is on his 25th year of being crucified in the cross.
Committee
The creation of the Maleldo Committee 2011 was supported by an ordinance signed by Mayor Oscar Rodriguez.
Executive Order No. 2011-09 states that the City Government recognizes the need to provide necessary intervention so there has to be a committee in charged of the Holy Week rites observation.
Among the functions of the committee is to assure the preservation of the Kapampangan ingenuity and hospitality.
Rodriguez is the honorary chairperson of the committee.
