200 Filipinos set to return from Japan next week

April 15, 2011
FOREIGN Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario said the agency has reserved 200 seats for the first two batches of Filipinos who will leave calamity-battered Japan this weekend.
The DFA chief said 100 seats have been allotted for a Philippine Airlines flight that will depart the Narita airport on Sunday and another 100 seats for a commercial flight on Monday.
However, a PAL official refused to confirm Del Rosario’s pronouncements although the airline had repeatedly assured assistance.
“We’re working out details for now. We will send a statement when ready,” PAL vice president for corporate communications Joey de Guzman told Sun.Star.
PAL is the largest carrier operating between the Philippines and Japan, with 32 flights weekly between six points – daily from Manila to Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka, five times weekly to Fukuoka, and six times weekly from Cebu to Tokyo.
Last Wednesday, the Philippine Embassy in Tokyo said that 55 Filipinos, including children, have expressed willingness to be repatriated due to the continuing nuclear emergency at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant.
No additional figure was presented on Thursday.
The embassy added that these Filipinos are set to undergo proper health screening at radiation screening facilities of the Japanese Government.
The Philippine embassy has identified Omiya in Saitama prefecture as the holding area for Filipinos, where their travel documents will be processed prior to their repatriation.
Accommodations in Saitama are likewise arranged for the Filipino nationals awaiting repatriation, the embassy said.
Upon arriving in Manila, they will also go through proper medical check-up as Del Rosario announced that not all of the 1,989 Filipinos wanted to be repatriated.
“Most of them are wives of Japanese men. Others planned to live in Tokyo for the meantime,” he said. (Sunnex)
