About Wines from Austria

Best wine supplier in Philippines discusses wine related topics

Austria´s most full-bodied red wines are crafted under the influence of the hot continental Pannonian climate in the eastern part of Burgenland. Of course, there are many natural distinctions and requisites which cannot be underestimated. For example, in the south, the Eisenberg – with its special soil and  touch of Styrian climatic freshness – has optimal conditions for Blaufränkisch and other red wines conveying a fine minerally character and incomparable elegance.

Wine Regions of Burgenalnd In the heavy loam soils of the Mittelburgenland as well as in the north of the Rosaliagebirge hills, Blaufränkisch that yields a special depth of fruit and impressive length is nurtured. In the hills to the  west of the Neusiedlersee (Lake Neusiedl), the varietal has a distinctive mineral note as well as good tannins. The eastern slope of the Leithagebirge, with its limestone and slate soils, is a unique terroir also for complex white wines, especially Weißburgunder, Chardonnay and, even more so, Grüner Veltliner. Fine Prädikat wines, such as the legendary Ruster Ausbruck, completes the Burganland´s range of wine excellence.

On the eastern side of the Neusiedlersee, the Blaue Zweigelt variety is dominant, yielding strong, juicy red wines. But of course, Blaufränkisch and St.Laurent show excellent results as well. The southern area, called Seewinkel, has a special microclimate that makes it one the few sweet wine strongholds in the world. Here, the high amount of air humidity created by the large lake as well as the numerous surrounding tiny lakes is highly favourable for the development of noble rot (Botrytis cynerea) on the grapes in the fall. This enables great Beerenauslesen and Trockenbeerenauslesen wines to be vinified from wonderful varietals like Chardonnay, Scheurebe, Traminer and especially Welschriesling, which reaches in these styles the highest quality level.

One of the truly special qualities of the Burgenland´s wine economy is the pioneering spirit of the winemakers here. This is why also international varietal wines as well as cuvée blends have received countless accolades in recent years as well.
