Alumni pitch in to rebuild razed school building

SAN SIMON — Alumni of the Assumpta Technical High School here have bonded together to rebuild a school building recently gutted down by recent fire here.
Mayor Leonora Capule-Wong of this town, president of the school’s batch ’79, donated P100,000 for the construction of a new school building to replace the eight-room building, used by pre-school pupils, destroyed by a fire.
Wong told Sun.Star Pampanga during a meeting with fellow Assupta alumni over the weekend that some P15 million will be needed for the construction of a new school building.
As of press time, they have already received other pledges of support.
She said that aside from her donation, other batches (1974, 1984, 1985 and 1983) have also pledged to donate P100,000 each; batch 1978 with P70,000; 1981 with P60,000; 1977 with P50,000; 1979 and 1986 with P20,000 each, while batches 1975, 1988 and 1989 also promised to provide financial support.
“It is indeed heartwarming to see everyone lending a helping hand. We cannot do this alone, that is why we’re appealing to our fellow alumni to extend their generous contributions for the construction of a new school building to help our alma mater and its students,” Wong said.
Manolito Tayag, president of the Assumpta Alumni Association, said the group’s short-term plan is to first improve (re-model) the old grade school building, which can be used temporarily by pre-school pupils when classes open in June.
Tayag said their long-term plan involves gathering enough funds for the construction of a new school building one or two years from now.
He appealed to his fellow alumni to get in touch with their batchmates and help raise funds for the project, saying it is the least they can do for their school, which has molded them in their younger years.
Engr. Joseph Musni of batch 1977, who is head of the construction committee, said the burned building can no longer be rehabilitated because the fire gutted most of the structure and that the steel beams are already “weak”.
Musni said another P800,000 is needed for the rehabilitation of the grade school building, which will be used by the incoming pre-school pupils. He expressed confidence that the job would be finished before the start of classes.
Some of the alumni, he said, have also pledged to donate construction materials aside from cash.
The fire, which gutted the pre-school building last March 26 was reportedly caused by faulty electrical wiring.
Fire fighters from San Simon, San Fernando, Angeles City, Mexico, Apalit and nearby towns responded to put out the blaze, as tricycle drivers near the school also helped. (Chris Navarro)
