Angeles inks sisterhood pact with Koror, Palau
ANGELES CITY — The Angeles City Government has forged a sister cityhood agreement with Koror State Government of the Republic of Palau.
Angeles City Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan and Koror Governor Yositaka Adachi signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) to establish the ties between the two cities.
Pamintuan, together with members of the City Council, warmly welcomed the delegates from Koror during the signing rites held at City Hall in Barangay Pulung Maragul here.
“I am very honored and happy with this agreement and I am grateful that you have chosen Angeles as one of your sister cities,” Pamintuan told the Koror delegation.
The mayor pointed out that the secret ingredients of a successful sister city relationship are mutual faith, trust, and sincere caring and sharing.
The Angeles City Council has approved a resolution needed for the formal establishment of the sisterhood pact.
For its part, the Koror State Legislature has also approved Resolution 09-17, providing for the formal establishment of sister city relationship with Angeles City.
The MOA signed by Pamintuan and Adachi stated, “Angeles City and Koror State will share a common desire to promote and foster strong special ties, mutual understanding, friendship and goodwill through exchanges in science and technology, culture and arts, tourism, planning and urban development, commerce/trade and industry, youth, education and sports, environmental protection, aquaculture, agriculture, public health and social services.”
As a gesture of friendship, Pamintuan presented Adachi the key to the city.
Pamintuan and Adachi found a lot of things their respective cities have in common.
The Philippines and Palau both have large groups of islands and their inhabitants are predominantly Christians, having been occupied and later ceded by Spain.
The two countries both have a Democratic Presidential Multi-Party governance system and a nuclear-free constitution.
Koror, which has been the venue of “Survivor Philippines,” is one of the 16 states of Palau. It is not very different from Angeles City in that a large portion of its income also comes from tourism – in particular, diving, hotels, bars, cafes and restaurants. (Reynaldo G. Navales)
