Will Hospices de Beaune escape the crisis unscathed? So far, there have been no problems selling the 2009 vintage. The 149th Hospices de Beaune Wine Auction finished this year with a 20% increase in sales in relation to 2008. All the items at the auction were sold, for a total sum of 4.9 million euros.
This is a good indicator of the health of the Burgundy wine sector as well as emerging trends : however, the Hospices de Beaune wine auction is an exceptional event. The 2009 edition was open to individual wine buyers for the first time, with the option of purchasing a single barrel of 228 litres. Although it remains difficult for an individual buyer, whether alone or in a group, to keep such a barrel for 14 to 16 months at the correct temperature and hygrometric conditions, not to mention bottling the wine, the professionals are taking steps to make it easier. We spoke to the communication and marketing director of Albert Bichot about a new initiative allowing individuals to make group purchases – an offer taken up by 500 people. In addition, during the wine auction, buyers were able to follow events on Christie’s Live and to take part via the website. 57 wine buyers participated online in this way.
It is difficult to know whether the high wine sales figures recorded at the auction were due largely to the increased number of buyers and the split batches. Professionals at the event tended to back this theory. However, many of the professional wine buyers were irritated by the presence of individual wine buyers, which lengthened the process considerably (the auction took more than 9 hours). Although none of the wine professionals would hazard a guess as to the part played by the good reputation of the 2009 vintage, they were unanimous in praising its high quality.
