Church alters routes to reach more people

Thursday, January 5, 2012
CEBU CITY — This year’s Fiesta Señor will focus on the family, as well as on caring for the environment in light of the devastation from Tropical Storm Sendong, an Augustinian priest said.
“We need to protect the family, which is the foundation of our faith and values,” said Basilica del Sto. Niño Rector Fr. Rodolfo Bugna, OSA.
Lawyer Paul Yabao, a member of the organizing committee for Cebu City, announced there are changes in the routes for two major processions: the Traslacion motorcade on January 13 and the grand foot procession on January 14, the eve of the Señor Sto. Niño’s feast day.
The 446th feast of the Sto. Niño centers on the theme “Sto. Niño: Refuge of the Filipino Christian Family.”
“We have a saying, no man is an island. This is a lesson we have learned versus today’s highly individualistic culture. There are so many suicide cases, because people feel alone,” Fr. Bugna said.
In a press conference Wednesday, he also said the religious celebrations cannot help but dwell on the impact of Sendong, which killed over 1,000 and displaced thousands of families, most of them in Cagayan de Oro, Iligan City and Negros Oriental.
As to the changes, these will affect the Traslacion, which is when the Sto. Niño’s image is brought to the National Shrine of St. Joseph in Mandaue City, from the Basilica del Sto. Niño in Cebu City.
From the Basilica, the contingent bringing the images of the Sto. Niño and Lady of Guadalupe will pass through Osmeña Blvd. and turn right to D. Jakosalem St., right to Gen. Maxilom (Mango) Ave., Gov. M. Cuenco, Juan Luna and M.J. Cuenco to the Cebu-Mandaue boundary in Barangay Mabolo.
The motorcade will pass by several landmarks, including the University of San Carlos-Boys’ High campus, Colegio de la Inmaculada Conception, Asilo dela Milagrosa, Knights of Columbus office, the three diocesan seminaries, Carmelite monastery and St. Joseph the Patriarch church.
The grand procession, set on January 14 or the eve of the feast day, is 6.8 kilometers long. It will pass through Osmeña Blvd. up to Fuente Osmeña, Gen. Maxilom Ave. toward Carreta cemetery, M. J. Cuenco Ave. to P. Gomez St. near the Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral, and back to the Basilica.
“There are many people who want to experience what it is like if the Sto. Niño passes by their place,” said Yabao of the reason for the procession route changes.
The new route for the Traslacion motorcade will be implemented every other year, he added.
Yabao also announced that medical stations will be set up along the grand procession route, handled by personnel from the Philippine Red Cross and medical schools.
The Metro Cebu Water District (MCWD), meanwhile, will set up water stations along the procession route, said MCWD Public Affairs Department head Charmaine Rodriguez.
Peace and order along the route was also assured by Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) Chief Ramon Melvin Buenafe.
He said more than 3,000, including personnel from the police regional office, will be deployed during the fiesta.
As part of security preparations, different crime personalities are now being monitored, said City Intelligence Branch Chief Romeo Santander.
He said they received reports about different gangs that might be in the city starting next week, but still have to validate these.
“It can’t be helped that some groups might spread stories about threatening the safety of the public, and some of these are not true. So, to be sure, we will have to validate it all,” explained Santander.
Also, workshops are being given to the different police stations in the city to enhance security preparedness.
The cities of Mandaue, Lapu-Lapu, and Talisay were also instructed to fine-tune security preparations.
“We consider Sinulog as an activity of the entire Cebu,” said Santander.
Cebu City Police Chief Buenafe also appealed “to all legitimate gun owners to bear with us because we will intensify the prohibition on the use of firearms.”
Buenafe added there must be proper coordination among operatives to ensure the safety of the Sinulog and Fiesta Señor crowds. (BAP/With JBT of Sun.Star Cebu)
