City health workers start anti-measles vaccination

ANGELES CITY — Health workers in this city started Tuesday the simultaneous nationwide month-long, door-to-door measles supplemental immunization campaign.
Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan has urged parents of children, especially nine months to eight years old, to have them vaccinated against measles.
Pamintuan said the city has been regularly implementing the annual “Ligtas Tigdas” campaign of the Department of Health (DOH).
“We are confident that through intensified immunization drive and strict monitoring, we will be able to prevent the disease from spreading in Angeles,” the mayor said.
Dr. Lenario Santos, city health officer, said the program with its theme “Iligtas sa Tigdas ang Pinas” is a commitment of the city to meet the DOH goal on making the country measles-free by 2012.
As of March this year, the city had 19 recorded measles cases and one of the patients was confirmed positive of the dreaded measles Rubella virus.
The 19 victims came from barangays Malabanias, 6; Cuayan, 4; Cutcut, 2; Sto. Cristo, 2; Lourdes Sur, 1; Anunas, 1; Pandan, 1; Balibago, 1; and Sta. Teresita, 1.
Santos said that some of the reported cases manifested fever and rashes but no coryza or cough, or conjunctiva was found negative in the laboratory examination.
“I am urging all mothers to cooperate with the door-to-door measles supplemental vaccination campaign which started April 4,” Santos said.
He said measles is a transferable disease caused by a virus affecting children. This virus can be transferred through air or direct contact.
“Children who suffer from measles may experience complications including pneumonia, diarrhea and dehydration, ear infection, deafness, encephalitis and blindness while complications due to measles can cause death,” Santos explained.
As to the symptoms, he said a child with measles usually has blotchy rashes all over the body for three days or more. “She or he has fever and at least any one of the following: coughing, runny nose and reddish eyes.”
If these symptoms occur in a child, the parents are advised to bring their child to the health centers or hospitals.
According to the World Health Organization, there is no treatment for measles and prevention can be done through immunization.
