City mayors hold rally at Supreme Court

MANILA — The League of Cities of the Philippines (LCP) on Wednesday morning held a protest rally at the Supreme Court (SC) grounds here to assail the reversal of the latter’s decision regarding the cityhood of 16 municipalities.
The rally was led by LCP president and City of San Fernando Mayor Oscar Rodriguez, public relations officer and Angeles City Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan, the group’s national executive board, and 66 city mayors with their contingents from all over the country.
Clad in red and brandishing flip-flops, the group filed its petition calling for the High Tribunal to uphold its earlier decision, which was final and executory.
The alleged “flip-flopping” of the SC has caused uproar within the 122-member LCP, citing huge losses in their internal revenue allotments greatly affecting programs and projects to the country’s “engines of growth.”
The filing of the petition was part of the LCP’s action plan even as a continuous nationwide protest will start on March 14 with the wearing of black armbands and noise barrage every Friday.
In the City of San Fernando, a silent protest was held Monday with employees and officials wearing armbands that said “Stop the illegal conversion of municipalities into cities.”
“We will go on with our protests until we are heard and the legality of the decision is upheld,” Rodriguez told Sun.Star Pampanga.
