Critics told: Identify crime committed by political adviser

Tuesday, October 11, 2011
MALACANANG on Tuesday dismissed criticisms against Presidential Political Adviser Ronald Llamas as mere political propaganda and challenged critics to identify the crime he committed.
Llamas is willing to undergo investigation on the high-caliber firearm found inside his sports utility vehicle, which figured in a traffic accident last week, presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said.
Several militant lawmakers earlier urged President Benigno Aquino III to look into the culpability of Llamas for not securing his firearms properly.
Llamas was in Geneva, Switzerland when the accident took place involving two security aides, who were later sacked for failure to obey his order to secure his AK-47 rifle.
ACT party-list Representative Antonio Tinio slammed Llamas, saying the President’s men were not only “utak wang-wang but also utak bang-bang.”
“Both the minority congressmen and the militant lawmakers — surprisingly have come out with a similar tack and it’s precisely because it’s just mere propaganda,” Lacierda said.
“They just spouted a propaganda line of ‘bang-bang’. But, they have lawyers within their midst and they failed to identify also what criminal case can be charged against Secretary Llamas,” he added.
He also scored the camp of former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s spokesperson Raul Lambino for saying that the Aquino administration is engaging in double standards in dealing with Llamas’s case.
“Lambino mentioned that there should be no double standard in government. He is a lawyer and the first thing he could have easily identified is what would have been the crime charge against Secretary Llamas. He didn’t go to any specifics because he realized that there’s no crime to be charged against Secretary Llamas,” he said.
Lacierda said Llamas has justified his need to carry firearm citing threats on his life.
He noted that not all Cabinet officials carry firearms, including him and co-spokesperson Ramon Carandang.
“Hindi po lahat kami may dinadalang armas po. Ako ang armas ko ay panalangin,” he said.
It is up to the authorities to determine Llamas’s possible liability, Lacierda said.
He also refused to comment on the possible revocation of Llamas’s license to carry firearms, saying it is also for the Philippine National Police (PNP) to decide.
In an ambush interview with Llamas Tuesday afternoon, the political adviser said that he already talked to the President regarding the accident.
“Well, he asked me the context of what happened and the political implications that the opposition might use to blow the issue out of proportion. He also asked about the legalities of my papers (license and permit to carry) and the report of the Philippine National Police,” he said.
He said the President seemed satisfied with his explanation and he was advised by Aquino to be more careful next time especially when it comes to trusting his staff.
He said his conversation with the President regarding the accident was “very minimal” as most of their talk focused on his trip in Switzerland to attend the United Nations High Commission for Refugees.
Llamas, meanwhile, denied earlier reports quoting him that he is willing to resign over the incident.
He clarified that he will not heed resignation calls against him especially if it came from the opposition camp, particularly from Negros Occidental Representative Iggy Arroyo.
“If only Iggy Arroyo will request for me to resign, I will think twice or thrice. We all serve at the pleasure of the President. Only the President can ask us to resign and definitely not Iggy Arroyo,” he said.
Llamas earlier confirmed owning the AK-47 rifle found inside his vehicle, which his security aide accidentally rammed into a truck last Friday along Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City.
He also admitted possessing four other firearms, including an M-16 rifle for protection purposes after receiving credible threats in life earlier this year. (Jill Beltran/Sunnex)
