DA’s help sought on rats’ problem

December 3, 2010

CANDABA – Candaba town officials have asked the agriculture department’s help in addressing the rat infestation in Mandili village that destroyed second crop palay seedlings two days ago.

Mayor Jerry Pelayo said he already submitted a report to the Department of Agriculture (DA) regional director regarding the extent of damage caused by the rat infestation.

Pelayo added that aside from rats, snails are also destroying palay seeds in Mandili village and in other areas as well.

The mayor assured the farmers that the Municipal Government is exerting all available remedies to address the problem. He said they are now closely coordinating with the farmers and barangay officials for immediate solutions.

Candaba municipal chief of staff Leny Manalo said the town officials are already identifying the areas where the rats are holed up. He said the town may also use artificial methods and chemicals to eradicate the infestation.

However, Manalo pointed out that the farmers should also consider a “balanced conservation” of the environment which can be attained through the concerted efforts by the people in the communities.

Manalo also reminded the public to stop capturing grass owls since it helps in catching rats.

Failure to address the problem might cause hunger among the villagers as of them are farmers, said Convictoria de Leon, village chief.(Herbert Mapiles)
