Execs file resolution vs hog farms

February 18, 2011

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — As a response to Governor Lilia Pineda’s call, village officials in Porac town have filed a resolution not to issue business permits to piggeries and poultry farms there.
In a phone interview, Acting Vice Mayor Michael Tapang said village officials from Barangay Sta. Cruz and Manibaug Paralaya filed the resolution before the Municipal Council.
The two villages houses 14 of the biggest piggeries and poultry farms in Porac.
Tapang said the resolution has also reached Mayor Condralito Dela Cruz’s office.
Dela Cruz is currently abroad for an official trip, leaving Vice Mayor Dexter David as the acting mayor and Tapang as the acting vice mayor.
Earlier, Governor Pineda asked Porac officials not to issue permits to operate to hog farms there as long as there are complaints against them.
The hog farms were the subjects of complaints by environmentalist groups because of foul smell, causing various illnesses to residents.
Pinoy Gumising Ka Movement headed by businessman Ruperto Cruz is one of the major oppositors of the hog farms, saying these have violated sanitation laws.
Should the resolution be approved, Tapang said it will be a short-term solution to the problem of foul smell in their town.
“The long-term solution to the problem is still the redefinition of land use in Porac. A new land use plan would determine whether lands in such villages are residential or industrial. If the land is residential, we have no choice but to close down and relocate these hog farms,” Tapang said.
Aside from her call not to issue permits, Pineda also asked Monterey Foods Corporation to assist the Provincial Government in inspecting hog farms in Porac.
Monterey is the country’s largest hog and cattle operation that uses the latest technology in feed milling, breeding, livestock raising, slaughtering, meat retailing, and meat processing.
“That is another welcome development for us,” Tapang said.
“Representatives of Monterey can probably teach us their technology for us to comply better with sanitation laws,” he added. (Charlene Cayabyab)
