Extensive agro-forestry projects implemented

MEMBERS of the Community Based Forest Management (CBFM) continue to implement livelihood projects, such as goat raising, chicken raising, tilapia production, agricrop production, and seedling propagation, in Central Luzon.
From the income derived from these projects, they were able to buy farm tools such as hand tractor, sprayer, grass cutter and other farm inputs. Some even constructed additional bunkhouses and installed billboards around the sites.

Saving accounts had been opened, benefit-sharing schemes had been established among members, and simple accounting system had also been adopted.
Regional chief Nida Manabat said these are just some of the benefits that farmers derived in the implementation of the CBFM.
In the CBFM, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and a peoples’ organization enter into an agreement. The latter occupies, develops, utilizes, and manages a specific portion of a forestland for the duration of 25 years. They can also claim ownership of all the improvements they introduce in the land.
At present, there are 15 CBFM sites in Central Luzon, with 1,573 farmer-beneficiaries who plant mahogany, bamboo, gmelina, narra, and fruit-bearing trees like coconut, cashew, papaya, banana, and other agricrops in some 4,558 hectares.
In Bataan, there are two CBFM-Bilolo agroforestry projects of the Bilolo Upland Farmers Association in Orion and the Ibis agroforestry of the Ibis MultiPurpose Coop in Bagac.
In Zambales, there are agroforestry projects in Barangay Dampay Salaza, Palauig and Barangay Taltal in Masinloc.
In Barangay Sta. Monica, Rizal; Barangay San Vicente, Laur; and Barangay Namulandayan, Lupao, all in Nueva Ecija, agroforestry farm projects and upland development projects also exist.
In Tarlac, in Barangays Nambalan, Binbinaca, and Labney, all in Mayantoc, some 465 farmers plant gmelina and malunggay in addition to other trees.
In Barangays Maasim, San Clemente; Lubigan in San Jose, and Barangays Sula and Mabini in Tarlac City, there are also silviculture projects.
These groups have also learned the use of organic fertilizer, biological control for pests, and the use of banana as green breaks.
They have also maintained their networking with local government units and other government agencies and shared field experiences in their annual meeting, Manabat added.
