Filipinos working in US bases in Afghanistan allowed to continue employment

FILIPINOS working in US military bases located in Afghanistan and Iraq will be allowed to continue their employment.
However, those seeking jobs in these countries will be disallowed from doing so since deployment ban remains in effect.
This clarification was made by a Palace official on Monday.
“After making an assessment of the conditions in Afghanistan and Iraq based on input from Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), we have recommended that Filipino workers who are already employed in US military bases and installations in these countries be allowed to remain there to continue their employment,” Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa Jr. said.
Ochoa, who chairs the Overseas Preparedness Response Team, said that no new workers will be allowed to travel to Afghanistan and Iraq for work for security purposes.
President Benigno Aquino III approved these recommendations last Friday.
Concerns were raised when the US military ordered all contractors last year not to hire third country nationals, whose domestic laws prohibit their citizens from traveling and working in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Washington had warned that contractors caught violating the order would no longer be allowed to bid in US projects in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The DFA estimates that the combined number of Filipinos working in Iraq and Afghanistan could reach 7,000.
Ochoa reiterated that the government would continue to closely monitor the situation on the ground to ensure the safety of Filipino workers who choose to remain in Afghanistan and Iraq.
“Ensuring the safety and security of our OFWs who work in Afghanistan and Iraq is our primary concern. Just as their livelihoods are important to them, their lives are important to us,” he said. “We will take whatever precautions necessary so that nothing untoward happens to Filipinos who work in these countries.”
Meanwhile, overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in Afghanistan on Monday urged the government to immediately inform their American employers of their decision to allow them to work beyond the original December 31 deadline.
The Philippine government’s approval would be futile if official communications are not sent to US military authorities there, the Filipinos in Afghanistan (FIA) said in a statement.
“(They must) issue immediately the memorandum to the US and international contractors embodying the spirit of the order of Malacañang in allowing the workers to continue working way past the deadline of December 31, 2011,” said the FIA.
They noted that the OFWs in Afghanistan are already “racing against time” since every company with Filipino employees are required to provide a comprehensive demobilization plan no later than September 9.
Included in the demobilization plan for their December 31 exits are the Exit Strategy Timeline (Termination Date, Exit Interviews, and Flight Information); Procedures to ensure all employees successfully depart Kandahar Airfield; and Potential Impacts to current US contracts.
Most of the Filipinos in Afghanistan are employed inside the two US bases in Afghanistan, namely the Bagram and Kandahar Airfields.
