Filling materials donated to low-lying barangays
December 6, 2010
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — Some P4.4 million worth of filling materials have been provided by the Provincial Government to schools and barangays in low-lying areas in a bid to avert perennial flooding.
According to Engr. Art Punzalan of the Environment and Natural Resources Office (ENRO), some 1,767 truckloads have been distributed to barangays in Guagua, Lubao, Macabebe, Masantol, San Simon, Magalang, Sta. Ana, Candaba, Apalit, Arayat, San Luis and the City of San Fernando in the past six months.
Punzalan said Gov. Lilia Pineda has instructed the ENRO to provide filling materials to schools and barangays in low-lying areas as assistance for embankment works there.
“This is with the aim to prevent further flooding in these areas, at the same time to utilize their unproductive areas,” Punzalan said.
Punzalan said this is being done in spite of the Provincial Government’s limited equipment. “That is why we have tied up with private entities for the use of their equipment so we can provide these areas with filling materials,” he said.
He noted that students in elementary schools are the ones affected by the perennial flooding in their areas.
Aside from the high quarry collections, Punzalan said the project also helps the municipalities and barangays with quarry operations in their areas. (Ria de Fiesta)
