Group assails mayor

February 11, 2011

ANGELES CITY — Members of an urban poor association here assailed Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan’s statement branding them as “professional squatters.”
About 200 members of the Kasama Mo Sa Pagbabago Na Lilikha Ng Isang Mabuting Gobierno (Kapanalig) who are occupying properties in Barangay Pandan here owned by Jaoville trooped to City Hall recently and aired their sentiments.
In a statement sent to Sun.Star, the group said Pamintuan and the rest of the city officials failed to take time and listen to its real situation and petition relative to the lots its members are occupying.

“The mayor has no right to call us ‘professional squatters’ because he didn’t even face us. How can he judge us when he did not see, hear and feel our predicament? He has not even visited the place,” Abelardo Pamintuan, president of Kapanalig, said in vernacular.
Pamintuan, in an interview Thursday, however, denied branding members of the group as “professional squatters.”
“No, I did not call them Angeles squatters or urban poor settlers,” he said.
But the mayor indicated that “there are professional squatters in our midst.”
He said an individual cannot just set up a shanty in any place and tell the government to pay the landowner to take part of the land.
“Squatting is against the law. That is why we have a law against it, such as eviction, ejectment and unlawful detainer,” he said.
Estrella de Jesus, a coordinator of Kapanalig, said most of their members did not go to work just to relay their plight to the authorities.
“It is disappointing that not even one of the councilors faced us. Most of us have to be absent from work and we have to walk under the heat of sun just to seek an audience with them but they failed to spare us a few minutes of their time,” she lamented.
Felicidad Llanita, also a coordinator of Kapanalig, revealed that some of their members who were given houses in different resettlement in the city returned to the Jaoville property because of their livelihood.
“It is true that some of us where given housing in another resettlement area but we have to return to Jao because of our livelihood. We received promises from the government, but nothing happened,” Llanita said.
In their petition, the Kapanalig members are asking the City Government to facilitate the expropriation of the property in their favor.
Aside from this, they are also seeking for livelihood projects, social services, and others.
Pamintuan said the Jao property is a valuable piece of real estate costing no less than P20,000 per square meter.
But the owners, the mayor said, are willing to donate 10 meters of their land along the busy Pandan Road leading to City Hall in Pulung Maragul for the government’s road widening project. (Reynaldo G. Navales)
