Group gives New Year gifts to poor townmates

STO. TOMAS — The Kayapan at Pakamal Tamu Sto. Tomas (Kayaptas) led the distribution of grocery items to some 50 residents of this town on Monday as part of the group’s community service programs.

Kayaptas spokesperson Irwin Nucum said the beneficiaries are mostly indigent residents of the town.

Kayaptas, he said, is aimed at providing a “glimmer of hope” for the beneficiaries this New Year.

“Though these gifts are short-term benefits, we see them as a perfect way to start the New Year for our indigent folk here,” Nucum said.

He added that gift-giving is part of the social services program of Kayaptas.

Starting late last year, Kayaptas had been sponsoring short-term training courses for residents here, for them to start small cottage businesses.

The group has also been active in hosting medical missions and social services programs for local residents.

Kayaptas, led by its president Melvin Calalang, is a Securities and Exchange Commission-registered and Municipal Council-accredited local civil society group that aims to become a key partner of the Municipal Government of Sto. Tomas in pushing for various programs and activities for the community, in response to the call for shared governance and responsible citizenship.

Nucum said their group will be hosting bigger missions this year and a host of livelihood trainings and programs for indigent residents, in cooperation with their respective service partners. (Ian Ocampo Flora)
