Hog farm found with ‘violations’
Wednesday, December 8, 2010
ANGELES CITY – City officials were dismayed to see during an ocular inspection on Monday that a piggery farm in Barangay Cutcut here has allegedly violated environmental laws.
During an inspection at the Kennon Farm, members of the City Council noted the presence of worms at the site.
“Although we are not environmentalists, we know that this is a sign of a violation of our environmental laws,” they said.
Councilor Jay Sangil, during the activity, reiterated that firms found to be in violation of the laws should be shut down.
“Like I said earlier, the City Council’s stand is clear in urging City Mayor Ed Pamintuan to exhaust all legal measures for the closure of these ‘polluting’ firms,” Sangil said.
Meanwhile, Councilor Edu Pamintuan said he will also urge Mayor Pamintuan not to issue sanitary and mayor’s permits to the Kennon Farm.
Earlier, the Kennon Farm has been sent a notice of violation by the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB), who noted that the wastewater sampling conducted by their field personnel shows the farm’s wastewater discharge has exceeded the efficient standard parameters, a violation of Republic Act 9275, or the Philippine Clean Water Act of 2004.
The letter dated last September was addressed to Charlie Chan, proponent of the said farm.
The said inspection was set by the City Council in light of several complaints filed by members of the Pinoy Gumising Ka Movement over the years regarding the dangers of the existence of these farms here.
The said inspection was led by the Angeles City Council, EMB officials of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and owners and operators of piggery and poultry farms here.
Another farm scheduled for inspection, the Paradise Farm owned by the Nepomuceno family, was closed during that time. Councilor Bryan Nepomuceno earlier told the City Council that their farm has been closed for some time.
