Maguindanao massacre hearing may be held thrice weekly

HEARINGS of the Maguindanao massacre may be held thrice a week to hasten resolution of the case resulting from a gruesome incident that took place almost two years ago.
Additional hearings may be held on Monday on top of the current Wednesday and Thursday proceedings, Quezon City Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 221 Judge Jocelyn Solis-Reyes said.
But the matter will still depend on a consensus between the prosecution and the defense panels, she added.
While defense lawyers have already agreed with the proposal, prosecutors from the Department of Justice (DOJ) said they will consult with other seven private prosecutors, including Nena Santos.
Santos represents Maguindanao governor Esmael “Toto” Mangudadatu, who lost his wife, Bai Genalyn, and two sisters, as well as several other relatives to the massacre.
To further expedite the case’s resolution, Solis-Reyes also asked the prosecution to prepare at least five witnesses for every trial day.
At present, the prosecution is required to present at least two witnesses per hearing as was agreed upon during last year’s preliminary trial.
The prosecution vowed to present at least 300 witnesses to bolster their case against the suspects, while the defense said they might present 200.
The twice-weekly hearings are held inside a makeshift courtroom at the Quezon City Jail Annex of the Metro Manila District Jail (MMDJ) inside Camp Bagong Diwa in Bicutan, Taguig. The facility is also where majority of the detained suspects, including the Ampatuans, are being kept.
Charged in the crime is former Maguindanao governor and the clan’s patriarch, Andal Ampatuan Sr., his son and namesake, Andal Jr., a former mayor of Datu Unsay town, suspended Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (Armm) governor Zaldy Ampatuan, Akmad Ampatuan, and Sajod Islam Ampatuan.
Only the two Andals have been arraigned by the court, both of whom have pleaded not guilty to the crime.
Multiple murder charges against 197 suspects though less than a hundred are in custody.
A total of 58 people, including 32 print and broadcast journalists, were killed by gunmen allegedly upon the orders of the Ampatuans on the morning of November 23, 2009. The reporters were set to cover the filing of the certificate of candidacy of Mangudadatu, who was then the vice mayor of Buluan town, for the province’ gubernatorial post.
Media groups led by the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines have started activities to commemorate the second year anniversary of the massacre next month. (AH/Sunnex)
