PAL flights return to normal, two months after outsourcing

PHILIPPINE Airlines (PAL) said its flights will return to normal beginning on Thursday, two months after its workers held a work stoppage to protest outsourcing of employees in three departments.
Operations will start to become normal with the consolidation of all PAL flights at its home base in Ninoy Aquino International Airport-Terminal 2 (Centennial Terminal), the airline said.
Flights serving the following destinations — Manila to and from Bacolod, Dipolog, Dumaguete, Ozamiz, and Zamboanga — were temporarily housed at the NAIA-Terminal 3 to decongest the Centennial Terminal.
The full in-flight meal service was also restored on Wednesday after a brief interruption caused by the transition to third party service providers and the protest camp of former PAL workers at the airline’s in-flight center in Pasay City.
PAL had earlier resumed its cargo operations on both domestic and international flights.
The airline used to mount 45-50 domestic and 80 international flights daily.
Starting on Thursday, daily domestic flights will average 50 to 60 while international will remain at 80, for an average daily flights of 140.
Following its outsourcing program on October 1 that led to the separation of more than 2,300 workers, PAL had to reduce domestic flights by 30 percent, while international flights were cut by 12 percent.
The reduction came shortly after a work stoppage prior to the implementation of the airline’s outsourcing plan.
PAL lost millions of dollars in income last September 27 after workers belonging to the ground crew union PAL Employees Association (Palea) refused to perform check-in, ramp, and catering functions in opposition to the spinoff program.
Last August, Malacañang recognized the PAL management’s prerogative to reorganize its corporate structure for the viability of its operations, to cut costs and to guarantee the airline’s continued survival.
PAL had said that the company’s P15-billion losses in 2008 and 2009 necessitated the restructure program, which includes cutting down on manpower costs.
Affected employees had received their separation benefits last October 15 in accordance with the ruling of the Department of Labor and Employment.
