Palace to Chief Justice: Take leave of absence

MANILA (Updated) — Chief Justice Renato Corona should take a leave of absence to avoid dragging members of the entire judiciary to his upcoming impeachment trial, a Malacañang official said Wednesday.
Presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said Corona is trying to involve the entire judiciary in the impeachment case against him.
“I think he should to take a leave considering that he’s the one undergoing trial,” Lacierda said.
Corona broke on Wednesday his silence after he was publicly chastised by President Benigno Aquino III for his supposed questionable decisions.
“Recently, I was openly criticized in public. But as a Christian from Batangas, I decided to keep my cool and just let it pass. I haven’t done anything wrong to you, Mr. President. I haven’t done anything wrong to the public,” Corona said.
He said he was baffled over Aquino’s desire to remove him. He added the President should have paid more attention to the economy, job creation, and hunger.
Corona also reiterated that he will not quit, and denied that he has been partial in issuing decisions regarding cases involving former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
Four motions led by recently formed group Bantay Gloria Network have already been filed at the High Court, asking Corona to inhibit himself in cases involving Arroyo, who has since denied allegations of rigging the results of the 2007 senatorial elections.
The Chief Justice also accused Aquino of trying to build a dictatorial regime by trying to control all three branches of government.
“He (Aquino) is only courting dictatorship, which is founded by deceiving and poisoning the minds of the people. I want you to know that I am against the continuous bullying and threats (by the government)…” Corona told his supporters, numbering about 500 and all wearing black, who assembled at the Supreme Court premises.
Some supporters brought placards chiding the Aquino administration for its plan to build a puppet judiciary.
Also attending the event were justices of the Court of Appeals, Sandiganbayan, and the High Court.
Senior Associate Justice Antonio Carpio and Aquino’s three appointees, Justices Lourdes Sereno, Bienvenido Reyes and Estela Perlas-Bernabe, were absent.
SC spokesperson Midas Marquez said they were overwhelmed with the support given by their fellow employees.
“We are happy that they had showed up. We didn’t expect the outpouring of support for the Chief Justice. However, we are not sure if there would be similar activities in the near future. They came here out of their own volition,” he told Sun.Star.
Batangas Trial Court branch 83 Judge Marjorie Uyengco-Nolasco asked Corona to soldier on.
“Don’t give in to pressures for you to resign. Be strong enough to face the impeachment court. We know in the end that you will be vindicated,” she said.
For his part, Lacierda said Corona’s speech is “full of lies”.
The Palace official added that Corona has no right to identify or accuse President Aquino of [building a] dictatorship because the Aquino family was also a victim of dictatorship during the Martial law years.
“I can tell you Chief Justice Corona, you are no Claudio Teehankee. He (Teehankee) has never spoken against the dictatorship. He is part of the status quo. What we are doing right now under the Aquino administration is trying to dismantle the Arroyo apparatus, of trying to protect her from accountability,” Lacierda said.
Teehankee, a Supreme Court justice during the Marcos administration, was known for his dissenting opinions.
Lacierda maintained that Corona is a stumbling block to the reforms being undertaken by the Aquino administration.
“We perceive him as someone whom we cannot rely on when it comes to genuine rule of law. He is biased from the very start. He will be biased to the very end,” the Palace official said.
He said President Aquino gave the Chief Justice the benefit of the doubt and gave him chance to prove that he is not indebted to Arroyo but Corona failed to prove it.
Lacierda, meanwhile, downplayed that the continuing word war between the executive and the judiciary would lead to constitutional crisis.
