PamCham visits water hyacinth processors

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO — The Pampanga Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PamCham) visited the production site of water hyacinth by-products processing in Barangay Pandaras for the integration of similar programs for livelihood projects here.
PamCham president Jim Jimenez with directors Ben Sy, Jesse Yap and Boy Bituin led the visit at the production site that is managed and manned by housewives residing in Barangay Pandaras.
Assisted by the Department of Trade and Industry-Pampanga, the 20 ladies were trained in the processing, which includes harvesting, drying, treating splitting, flattening and gluing the water hyacinth strips to a fabric sheet – of water hyacinths into raw materials/sheets for paper bags, placemats, wallets, slippers, shoes, belts, and even vests.The proliferation of water hyacinths in the flood-prone barangay’s waterways motivated these women to make something productive to an otherwise threat to their safety and well being. Their earnings from the processing of water hyacinths supplements and augments their family’s livelihood.
PamCham hopes to assist the group in the marketing and promotion of their products. Jimenez noted that design and quality of the produced items are crucial factors to improve on, to be able to meet the standards of high-end costumers who are the projected target market to immediately realize national and global exposure for the water hyacinth products.
PamCham hopes to appeal for the support of Filipino designers of global repute, the likes of Rajo Laurel, Amina Aranaz and others of similar caliber, and eco-friendly advocacies in developing product lines using water hyacinths as base material.
The chamber also committed to advocate for increased awareness of the project’s positive contribution in climate change mitigation.
Water hyacinth harvesting and processing will tremendously relieve the flooding problems in the province of Pampanga. It can be recalled that the inundation caused by Typhoon Falcon recently was partly attributed to the volume of water hyacinths blocking the province’s waterways.
