Pangasinan delists voters

MAJORITY of voters removed from Pangasinan’s voters lists were delisted after they failed to cast their ballots during the last two elections.
This was recently announced by Temmy Lambino, the Commission on Elections’ (Comelec) provincial election supervisor after local poll officials cleaned up its voters list.
More than 140,000 voters have been delisted in Pangasinan, which has the third-largest voting population in the Philippines, officials said.
Of the total 148,472 delisted from 44 towns and four cities in Pangasinan, nearly all at 141,177 were removed due to their failure to vote twice, particularly during the May 2010 national and local elections and the October 2010 barangay and Youth Council elections.
Some 1,736 transferred to another province, 276 registered twice, 198 had double entries, and 5,094 died.
The figures are based on the consolidated progress report submitted by the Provincial Elections Office during the Election Registration Board hearing held on July 18, 2011.
Localities with the most number of delisted registered voters are San Carlos City with 20,440 (from its 86 barangays), Malasiqui (11,192 voters), Urdaneta City (10,017), Calasiao (9,451) and Dagupan City (7,245).
The towns with the least number of deactivated registered voters are Rosales with 91, Aguilar (126), Basista (186), Manaoag (429), Bayambang (533) and Sto. Tomas (567).
Those delisted will be sent letters informing them of their removal from the list. Should they wish to vote in the province again, all they have to do is present the letter at the local elections office and signify their intention of voting at the same precinct, Lambino said.
As of August 2010, the registered number of votes in Pangasinan is at 1,615,277, making it the third-largest vote-rich province in the Philippines, followed by Cebu and Cavite, which has nearly 2.5 million votes and a little more than 1.6 million, respectively.
A total of 3,093 voters were added to the list of the province’s registered voters, Lambino said, adding that these included new registrants, transferees, reinstated and reactivated voters. (Liway C. Manantan-Yparraguirre/Sunnex)
